Cake

It was James's birthday on January 29, so I decided to write about making the cake (mostly the frosting). I made him a dinosaur cake, just for fun because I'm taking a dinosaur class this semester.

Some fun things I've learned about dinosaurs so far:

  • Birds are dinosaurs.
  • Snakes used to have legs.
  • Tyrannosaurus Rex had feathers.
  • Pterodactyls aren't dinosaurs. By the way, why can't you hear pterodactyls when they go to the bathroom? Because the P is silent.

So for the dinosaur cake I wanted to have a water hole for the dinosaurs to drink out of, made out of blue frosting. Since my mom has found out how to make extraordinary frosting dye out of complete and utter scratch, I decided that would be fun to try. She texted me the directions.

First, you buy a big old red cabbage. Boil half of it for a long time and then compare the two halves. It looks like a brain on drugs!....... I am still trying to figure out what to do with the sober half.

Next strain out all the cabbage from the water, and then you boil away all the purple water until there are just a few tablespoons of purple dye left.

Mix the dye with baking powder and then into the frosting with yeh! My mom uses cream to make the frosting but I only had milk. I figured it didn't HAVE to taste that good because it was just a little pool of water for the dinosaurs. They're used to water with algae and dirt in it, probably.

(It's periwinkle colored here, but adding more baking powder and also baking soda made it look more blue.)

So here's the cake!

The dinosaurs are courtesy of my brother Josh.
The trees are courtesy of broccoli, and the rocks are courtesy of my parents giving us truffles and chocolate candy.

A happy 24 year old man!

Sadly, the brown frosting is actually made of melted (and re-hardened) chocolate chips, and I spread it way too thick over the cake. It was hard to break through without destroying the cake, so we put as many candles as possible into just a few holes....

Cutting and serving it was QUITE a sight. Luckily it still tasted good!

Honeymoon

Hooray for our first blog post!!!

First, we are so grateful for all of the work that everyone did for our wedding! It was so wonderful. Everyone did so much and we didn't really get a chance to actually thank them because there was so much going on that day and there were all these sparklers in the way and then we left for a week and got back and BAM, school started and...Yes, excuses, excuses. So, since we won't be getting those formal thank you notes out for a few years yet, we wanted to make sure our family know how much we really appreciated everything they did.

Caroline made the slideshow which was fantastic! I am amazed that she even included the temple pictures from that morning! Also, I'm pretty sure getting Rickrolled was James's favorite part of the whole reception.
Marianne got me a SEWING MACHINE! :) So far it is working great. However I haven't been able to do anything with it yet except fix James's pants because we've been busy with school :)
Abbey was wonderfully nice to throw me a bridal shower the night before the wedding! It was really lovely and I had a lot of fun! James did too, at the Nickel Arcade.
AnnaMarie did the beautiful guest book! I loved all the places inside for guests to write things. A few favorites...

Q: What will you remember most about our big day?
A: Watching you two look into the mirrors of the temple together, Jim.

Q: What's your best advice for being happy and staying in love forever?
A (from Calvin): Don't get any divorces.

And Katie's picture of me and James:

We really enjoyed looking at these and all our other special gifts. But that wasn't until after the honeymoon. Honeymoon? Oh, that reminds me. Here are some honeymoon pictures!

Looking fancy on Formal Night

James got cheesecake for dessert almost every single day.
And look how happy he is!

On the windy deck of the ship!

James loved relaxing on the deck

Waiting for the New Years balloon drop.

Mini golf on the top deck!

Ah, look at him gaze off into the horizon...

James took some really pretty pictures of the ocean and skyline:

James captured the romantic sunset using his telephoto lens.

Grand Turk Island! (And Princess Caye Island)

And how could we resist the hats?!

Probably the best vacation ever.
